How to Care for Your Cotton Pyjamas

Everything we make is intended to be worn hundreds of times. These are the few habits that decide whether it looks lovely in year five.
Washing
- Cold, gentle cycle — heat is what shrinks and dulls cotton
- Turn embroidered and lace pieces inside out, or use a mesh bag
- A mild liquid detergent; powders can sit in the lace
- Never bleach — it yellows white cotton over time rather than whitening it
- Skip fabric softener; it coats the fibres and reduces breathability
Drying
Line dry in the shade. Direct Australian sun will weaken fibres and fade colour, and a hot dryer is the fastest way to lose a hem. Shake each piece out before hanging and most of the ironing disappears.
Wash it as though you intend to keep it. You probably do.
Storing
Fold rather than hang — hangers stretch shoulders on lightweight cotton. Keep a little lavender in the drawer, and give anything heirloom a sheet of acid-free tissue.
