The Best Cotton Sleepwear for Warm Australian Nights
By Heaven Sent Pretty · 18 May 2026 · 7 min read
By January, most sleepwear has quietly given up. Synthetics cling, heavy knits hold warmth, and you wake at two in the morning pushing the sheet away. Cotton is the reason our summer pieces feel different, but not all cotton sleepwear behaves the same way.
Why cotton wins in summer
Cotton is a natural fibre with a hollow structure, so it takes moisture away from the skin and releases it into the air instead of holding it against you. Polyester does the opposite. On a humid Perth or Brisbane night, that difference is the whole night's sleep.
What to look for
- 100% cotton, ideally lawn, voile or fine poplin for summer weight
- A loose cut through the body — air needs somewhere to move
- Short or flutter sleeves rather than a fitted long sleeve
- Simple, flat trims that will not press into you while you sleep
- A hem above the ankle so your legs stay free
If you wake up tugging at it, the fabric was never the right one.
Nightgown, pyjamas or a slip?
For the hottest nights, a cotton nightgown is unbeatable — nothing at the waist, nothing between the knees. Pyjama sets suit anyone who shares a house and likes to make tea at midnight without a robe. A cotton slip sits somewhere between the two and travels beautifully.
Caring for cotton so it stays cool
Wash cool and gently, skip fabric softener — it coats the fibres and undoes the breathability you paid for — and dry in the shade. Cotton improves with washing when it is treated kindly.
