How to Create a Bedroom Sanctuary

Most bedrooms are storage with a bed in them. A sanctuary is the same room with a few things removed and a few things added on purpose. You can do most of it in an afternoon, with nothing bought at all.
One — take three things out
Begin by subtracting. The laundry basket, the work bag, the pile that has been on the chair since autumn. A room cannot feel restful while it is still asking you for something.
Two — change the light
Overhead lighting is the enemy of evening. Put a lamp on each side of the bed, use warm bulbs, and light a candle an hour before bed. Your body reads low, warm light as permission to slow down.
Lower the light and the whole room lowers its voice.
Three — layer what you can touch
- Cotton or linen sheets, washed soft
- A light quilt to fold back rather than one heavy cover
- One beautiful pillowcase you keep for yourself
- A rug or sheepskin where your feet land in the morning
Four — give the room a scent
Linen water on the pillows, a small posy on the dresser, lavender in the drawer. Scent is the fastest route to memory, and a room that smells the same each night becomes a cue for sleep.
Five — dress for the room
It is a strange thing to make a beautiful bed and then climb into it in an old work shirt. A cotton nightdress or a proper pyjama set completes the ritual, and costs nothing in effort once it is folded in the drawer.
