The Perfect Evening Ritual for Better Sleep
By Heaven Sent Pretty · 18 June 2026 · 6 min read
We treat sleep like a switch and then wonder why it will not flick. The body prefers a slope: light going down, noise going down, temperature going down, and a set of small signals repeated until they mean something.
Ninety minutes before bed
- 01
Lower the light
Lamps and candles only. Overhead lights tell your body it is still afternoon.
- 02
Make tea
Chamomile, lemon balm or peppermint. The making is as useful as the drinking.
- 03
Close the day
Write tomorrow's three things on paper so your mind can stop rehearsing them.
- 04
Change
Get into your nightdress or pyjamas well before bed — it is the clearest signal you can give yourself.
- 05
Read something gentle
Paper, not a screen. Fiction, not the news.
Repeat the same five small things and your body will start falling asleep before you do.
Why what you wear matters
Body temperature has to drop for sleep to begin. Breathable cotton lets that happen; synthetics trap the warmth and wake you at three. A loose cut and a soft waistband do more for sleep quality than most supplements.
The art of going to bed early
Going to bed early is not a loss of the evening — it is a gift to the morning. Try it for a week and see how differently the light looks at seven.
